The latest addition to Harare’s music scene, Blaqberry Jazz, presents a fresh, cultured, mature, funky, enticing, energetic and intimately soothing approach to jazz.
The outfit’s music has universal appeal; it transcends age, preferences and social standing.
Blaqberry Jazz is an incredibly mesmerising and versatile band. It expertly blends diverse genres including blues, soul, rock, funk, mhande, kwaito and classical music with strong elements of jazz to create great organic, homegrown and original music.
This quartet of passionate and energetic musicians brings together the talents of Filbert Marova, Eve Kawadza, Tafadzwa Marova and Mutsawashe Gudlanga.
One of Zimbabwe’s finest, the veteran pianist, songwriter, musician and producer, Filbert Marova, brings a wealth of experience to the band. A founding member of Jazz Invitation, he wrote and produced Jazz Invitation’s formidable hit single BP Yangu Yakwira (off the album Rehearsal Room, 2004), sung by Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana.
His debut album Kariba Bream won the coveted Zimbabwe Music Award (Best Jazz Album of 2006).
He has also worked with a number of local and international artists including Dorothy Masuka, Simangaliso Tutani, Chris Berry, Cool Crooners, Rusike Brothers, Brian Paul, Willis Watafi and Bob Nyabinde. Blaqberry Jazz boasts the unique vocal talent of Eve Kawadza, whose mature, soulful and sultry voice belies her young age.
