Sculptor Rainos Tawonameso

IN a surprising career twist, Rainos Tawonameso, the mastermind behind the iconic Nyaminyami walking stick, has launched a new creative outlet: aquaculture.

The seasoned sculptor has dug two ponds in Juliet village, Nyamakate, and is rearing over 20 000 fish.

“I’m passionate about contributing to food security,”he said.

“Aquaculture is a great way to provide protein rich food for the community and generate income.

“I am excited to see the impact it will have on local livelihoods.

“It’s not just about me; it’s about empowering the community and creating opportunities.”

Tawonameso’s love for creativity has found a new outlet in fish farming.

He designed the first Nyaminyami walking stick in 1986 and has since travelled extensively across Africa and Europe, showcasing his art.

Now, he is bringing his skills home to Hurungwe, applying his creative flair to a new venture.

He is already planning to expand, applying to the council to build larger ponds that can accommodate over 100 000 fish.

“This project is about more than just fish.

“It’s about creating a sustainable business that benefits the community.

“I’m looking forward to seeing my fish on plates across the country.”

Aquaculture is a growing industry in Zimbabwe, with potential to boost the economy and improve food security.

“Fishing and aquaculture are key contributors to the local economy, supporting thousands of people,” said local fishing expert TichaonaManzungu.

Tawonameso’s project is expected to create jobs and stimulate local growth, providing a much-needed boost to the rural economy.

As Zimbabwe seeks to diversify its economy, initiatives like Tawonameso’s are giving hope for sustainable development.

With his entrepreneurial spirit and creative flair, he is turning a new page.

“I’m proud to be part of this movement, contributing to the country’s growth and development.”
