A lady with a big heart for underprivileged

A YOUNG university graduate from Bulawayo last week celebrated Valentine’s Day with a difference.

Ntombi Ndlovu, who is a former National University of Science and Technology student, spent the day raising funds for the less-privileged in a very unique, albeit “controversial”, way.

She hosted a fundraising dinner where beautiful ladies were “auctioned” to the highest bidder, with the money being used directly to benefit young orphans.

Speaking at the event, held at Grand Arcade in Bulawayo, Ndlovu said she felt she had come full circle.

“This is our second fundraiser of the Goodwill Freewill Foundation. We started about five years ago after I lost my mother. My father passed away when I was four and my mother developed health challenges. I pay tribute to her by helping others because I benefited from the goodness of other people’s hearts. Even strangers would show up for me. I can’t thank everyone enough, so this is the best way to do it,” she told NewDay Life & Style.

Ndlovu, who came short of tears said she could not stop being anxious for the next person.

“Very few things trigger me, but when I see a person in need and feel unable to help them, it wrenches my heart beyond understanding. I think of children who do not have parents. Sometimes we donate to people who have families, but are impoverished. At times we attend to those who are physically challenged. When I look at street kids, I remember that if God hadn’t allowed me the grace to have my mother for as long as I did, I could have easily been one of them (street kids),” she said.

Ndlovu looks forward to adopting at least two children this year.

“It might not be the legal context of adoption, but financially they have to be taken care of. That means sending a child to school, buying stationery and uniform for them. Although there is no special age to qualify for aid, I do prioritise children. I believe I am going far in life. I wouldn’t have been where I am if someone hadn’t helped me, so I want to provide the same for them,” she said.

Notable attendees at the charity event included Instagram star Jahalezansi Sibanda and model Botsi Lyra Noko.
