HARARE, June 24 (NewsDay Live) - Constitution Amendment No. 3 Bill has Wednesday night sailed through the Senate after receiving overwhelming support from both Zanu PF and opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) senators.
A total of 75 senators voted in favour of the Bill, while four voted against it, securing the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments.
The vote followed debate in the Senate, where several opposition senators broke ranks to support the controversial legislation despite resistance from civic groups, constitutional experts and some opposition figures.
The Bill now awaits transmission to President Emmerson Mnangagwa for assent before it becomes law.
CAB3 seeks, among other changes, to extend the tenure for Mnangagwa, the sitting Parliament and the local authority.
The Senate vote comes after the Bill was fast-tracked through its first and second readings and committee stages Tuesday, setting the stage for Wednesday’s decisive vote.
CCC senators that voted against CAB3 are Sesek Zvidzai (Midlands), Solani Moyo (Matabeleland South), Meliwe Phthi (Matabeleland South), and Nonhlanhla Mlotshwa (Matabeleland South).
