Rogue soldiers sentenced 40 years for robbery

By Desmond Chingarande  Two serving members of the Zimbabwe National Army who were involved in an armed robbery in Marondera have been sentenced to 40 years each by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces General Court Martial, NewsDay has learnt.

Lance Corporal Tatenda Dzimbanhete and trooper Wilfred Munatsi were convicted by the  Zimbabwe Defence Forces General Court Martial on Wednesday this week.

The two had their prison sentences reduced by five years each and will serve 35 years each respectively, according to the statement by army director of public relations Alphios Makotore

The duo was also ordered to restitute the complainant, Simon Arnold of Surrey Farm near Marondera.

“Five years each of their respective sentences were suspended on condition that they restitute the complainant, Simon Arnold of Surrey Farm near Marondera, cash amounting to USS 16 830 and R600,” Makotore said.

Both were reduced ranks to private and first year trooper and were also discharged from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces with ignominy.

The court heard that the two pleaded guilty to the charges of armed robbery which they committed on 15 November 2021.

Makotore said the army will not tolerate indiscipline and will continue passing deterrent sentences.

“The Zimbabwe National Army does not condone cases of indiscipline and misconduct and will continue to pass deterrent sentences on any would be offenders,”Makotore said.
