A SERIAL Mozambican armed robber who had terrorised Mutare residents, assaulting victims using a machete while raping others, was last week arrested in the neighbouring country.
Ernest Chirara (34) appeared before Mutare magistrate Notebulgar Muchineripi on Monday facing 31 cases of robbery and rape.
He was remanded in custody to November 22.
Allegations are that between October 15 and December 2018, the accused connived with accomplices Domingo Luis Zuze and Kudakwashe Chirara, who have already been arrested and sentenced at Mutare Magistrates Court.
The accused was on the run until he was nabbed by detectives in Mozambique.
In the first count, it is the State’s case that on October 15 last year, the accused and his accomplices armed themselves with machetes, went to Sydney Muafani’s house in Mutare and forced open the door with an unknown object.
They threatened the complainant who gave them $735, a pair of trousers, a radio set and some blankets.

In the morning at around 3am, they broke into Dumisani Nyathi’s house and demanded money and were given US$1 000.
In count 16, it is alleged that the accused person forced open the door of another house and raped the complainant once before ransacking the house.
Chirara and his accomplices used the same modus operandi in the other cases.
