A SERVING member of the Zimbabwe National Army stationed at One Indeep Barracks in Beitbridge and an active member of the neighbourhood watch committee in the Zimbabwe Republic Police, have been taken to court for carjacking and robbery.

Corporal Nobert Muringo (36) and NWC ZRP member Milton Chauke (Cally) (48) on Tuesday appeared before Beitbridge magistrate Crispen Mberewere, charged with robbery.
They pleaded not guilty to the charge and they were remanded in custody to today for trial.
Prosecutor Munyonga Kuvarega told the court that the two allegedly robbed Benson Shoko (24) of Dulibadzimo suburb in Beitbridge of his Toyota Rav4 and $700.
He said on April 26, Chauke and accomplices only identified as Shame and Newzie, who are still at large, approached Shoko, who had parked his car at Chamunanga village around 3am after it had a puncture.
Shame and Newzie used machetes to threaten Shoko to either surrender his car or pay ZAR20 000. They allegedly accused him of having smuggled the vehicle into the country.
Fearing for his life, Shoko allegedly gave them US$700 – but they kept on threatening him until he surrendered the car. The three allegedly told Muringo to collect the car.

The court heard that Muringo directed Chauke and his colleagues to meet him at Jopembe turn-off, where he took the car and drove it to Bulawayo in the company of the three.
They allegedly sold the car in Bulawayo and shared the spoils. The vehicle is valued at ZAR200 000 and nothing was recovered.
A report was made to the police and investigations led to Chauke and Muringo’s arrest.
