War vets to die poor, used, abused

THE fall of those who fought for President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the military takeover, the war veterans, is clear testimony that this group, this constituency, is a victim of political manipulation.

By Isaac Mupinyuri,Our Reader

At every stage of political challenges in Zanu PF, they are called to defend the rich and their stakes.

When the political storm settles, they are thrown into the trash can.

Deny it or be angry about it, this is the life of the group Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association chairperson Christopher Mutsvangwa leads.

They rise to recognition as they want to be used and fall heavily to zeros.

The Mnangagwa government came into being as a result of a fight between the war vets and G40, which had sidelined the above.

Mnangagwa, backed by the war vets, had faced a freefall of his political fortunes as former President Robert Mugabe had become ruthless, crushing him left, right and centre.

The war vets were the only support Mnangagwa was left with and they risked their lives by continuing to support him against a wounded Mugabe.

This group suffered enough after independence. The problems they encountered mainly were to restore what they call the gains of liberation struggle.

They invaded white-owned farms for Mugabe’s political survival, they murdered innocent opposition in the name of the same, they were sprayed itching water by police water canons at Freedom Square in the capital when they started to stand against former First Lady Grace Mugabe’s abuse of Zanu PF seniors.

They have suffered at every stage of turn of events. They are Zanu PF objects to retain power and victims when they want to be heard or when they show minimum reason.

Can this endangered specie continue being a recipient of every brute? This is a painful life experience the few left must ask themselves such questions.

Democracy, I understand, must be practised, but at least sometimes let’s protect everyone. Legends like Mutsvangwa, war vets spokesperson Douglas Mahiya and secretary-general Douglas Matemadanda and their few left colleagues must be protected by Mnangagwa than to be threatened, as they saved his political fall, as he was on a free fall.

Mnangagwa was supposed to reign in aspiring contestants the few areas the war veterans were going to stand.

These are poor people who saved Mnangagwa and deserved his pay back, but never, they fell like ordinary villagers.

This is the pain this group of people has encountered in their whole life. Unfortunately, they are overlooked just like that.

Most of these people are leading the poorest of lives wherever they are. They live a life where they must hide their status of war veteran.

While we are entering these election, the intelligent are warming up to using them I know. After reading this letter, those in power will have war veterans’ pensions increased.

This is to deceive them so they can use them during elections. War vets must move from being used by Zanu PF.
They were promised to take control of government business, but that never came. Instead, the few at the top are mere stooges.

Mutsvangwa must lead a true revolution, a revolution for the war veterans life. They are being used, abused and dumped.

They could deny it, but the sun will never rise for them.

Most war vets died many years ago ,& only a few are left, so where are all those many so called war vets emerging from ??

    1. Chief Charumbira

The war vets are a special species who should be rewarded handsomely for their selfless sacrifices rather than be used by the powers that be. The likes of Mutsvangwa, Mahiya and Matemadanda need special recognition for the gallant and heroic struggles against the G40 cabal who were bent on destroying the gains of the liberation struggle. If the truth be told, the trio endured torture by the Mugabe Regime for their unwavering support of the present President and we expect him to reciprocate by ensuring their ascendancy to lofty political positions.

  5. Real war veterans died long back. War veterans in Zimbabwe are a real problem for sure. They made our life difficulty for during Mugabe era. Life was not easy because of the war vets. Minda vakatora chabuda hapana kurima sora. Ma50 000 vakapihwa vamwe vakatengera madhongi nemombe macabage. Bhazi raitakura munhu one pambare achibhadhara maseats ese akananga kumusha. They destroyed our vibrant industry, they destroyed our education they destroyed our health system they supported the dictator and killed all Mugabe opponents. Ma War vets for I don’t like them even appreciate what they did before and after fighting the smith regime. Who forced them to go to war. They think they are the only people eligible to benefit in this country. It’s not a crime to be born free. Matatumwa nani kunorwa?

    1. stop being so unrealistic and inconsiderate, we are all humans these guys they sacrificed their lives and time to go for war..some of them, left schools were they were supposed to attain their degrees, diplomas and become professionals.. just like you? Others they left their good jobs were they were paid handsomely to go for war..”makatumwa nani kunorwa?,”.It appears easier said than done.. its so easy for you now to say such ill gotten words.. just because you are now free..it wasn’t a bed of roses and that fact must not be taken away from them..actually they made you look.. do your research worldwide, in different countries they owner their veteran soldiers ..some they actually died for you and me to be free and they are not even here today.. Let us not politicize and feign ignorance, about the welfare of war veterans its something that you cannot take away from them no matter how much you despise them..They deserve to be recognized so are the pensioners and those senior citizens

  6. War vets are struggling to make ends meet. I have my uncle who comes every month from Chiweshe to get $50 at POSB. He will sleep at the bank for 2 to 3 days in order to get the money. But during elections, he will be on the forefront being used to terrorise MDC members in Mazowe. I feel pity for war vets because each time when Zanu pf is in trouble, the top guns turn to war vets. kana zvanaka, they are easily forgotten.

  7. chavasingazivi kuti vaka gwira nyika here kana kuti zanu. dai vaziva izvozvo vasatifuridzira mweya.

  9. The so-called warvets thoroughly deserve what’s befelling them under zanupf regime. For starters they were hoodwinked into joining a bushwar without proper training and brief on the war’s pros and cons hence they were destroying the very infrastructure required for a progressive nation. One will remember how they destroyed dip-tanks schools and roads in rural areas, how they terrorised villagers for food and sexual entertainment from villagers daughters. Its payback time and yes most of them will die poor.

    1. Mukwirivindi WaMazungunye

You are wrong. The war vets were not hoodwinked. They knew what they were figting for. The war was not a dinner party. I wish I was with you when we experienced a Rhodesian plane attack in the bush make shift base camp, when every second determined whether you live or die.

    2. Comment…they deserve it

  10. Sorry, but doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different outcome is the height of idiocy or stupidity.

May those who braved to liberate the Republic during the liberational war struggle from the colonial bondage be honoured for their gallant sacrifice. May those whose blood was lost for this cause, souls rest in eternal peace, let their love be honoured and remembered for generations to come. We shall forever cherish the peace, tranquillity and the democratic principle they brought about and which we continue to enjoy today in our beloved nation of Zimbabwe.

Long live the Revolution of the Republic of Zimbabwe.

God bless the nation of the Republic of Zimbabwe.

War veterans are not a special group of people. They are not the only ones who suffered during the war. If anything, they contributed to the suffering of common people by demanding five star treatment. After independence they allowed themselves to be used when it was clear that those using them had demonstrated their disdain in the past. Personally I have no sympathy for them. They say they are stockholders of this country but who gave them the stock certificate?

  14. Nonsense, these people have been enjoying a lot. School fees for their children, land and those 50.000.00 dollars which they are abused, utter nonsense, they are mercenaries.

    1. how many have been enjoying

  15. what people don’t know is that war veterans are very important regardless of which country they are from. Most Zimbos look up to America as a well governed country and a leader in democracy, in america every form you fill in has a section that asks if one is a war veteran and like what Chamisa always says in parliament, for this country to move forward the issue of war vets has to be dealt with. there was blood that was shed for this country and Christians can testify that blood is a very important in anything

    1. Respect is earned, their conduct after independence has erased all the respect earned before independence. War veterans in America have not disgraced themselves like ours who want to be free loaders. From the little benefits they are getting from the state, surely if they are economically active in whatever small capacity their lives would not be as miserable, but no they want to be pensioners at 50 something, all because they “worked” the war of independence.

    2. wakapenga u you know life

  16. Only in Zimbabwe do we hear about war veterans ad nauseum. The world is full of war veterans who, when their war is over, go home and get on with their lives. Anyone who demands to be paid 40 years after a war is over is a parasite.

    1. in America everywhere you go, if you applying for a loan or anything, they ask this question. ARE YOU A WAR VETERAN?

  17. Comment…tinotenda newarveterians nekusunungura nyika kuitira isu vana venyu kuti tizvitönge imi chisiyai zvematongerwo enyika tiitewo isu vana venyu

  18. A rather mischievous article with a-not-so hidden agenda of causing despondency among the rank and file of war veterans, who have been handsomely rewarded by gratuities.

  19. There are many people in the rural areas who participated in the war. They lost their livestocks feeding the freedom fighters. The problem is that they are some who want to be more special than others. The war veterans also did not have a proper vision on what they were supposed to benefit because you find some of them are filthy rich and some are paupers.
    The leaders are to blame

  20. Whereas i agree with the gist of the article I however beg to aver that unlike his co-veterans, Christopher Mutsvangwa is hardly the kind of character to shed tears over.
The man thinks the nation owes him a living, is bullish, pompous, stuck in the past, averse to alternative views and a downright disaster as a presidential advisor.
No wonder the electorate rejected him as they will undoubtedly do again on the 14th May!!

  21. THE WRITER OF THIS STORY DOES NOT SYMPATHISE WITH WAR VETERAN AT ALL . THE WRITER IS SIMPLY A CAMPAIGN MANAGER OF THE MDC PERIOD. IF ONE OR TWO WAR VETERANS LOSE A ZANUPF PRIMARY ELECTION DOES THAT TRANSLATE TO BEING USED, NO OUR JOURNALISM REQUIRE OPERATION RESTORE LEGACY, THIS STORY IS SIMPLY ZERO. DO YOU BLAME ED IF ANYONE LOSE A PRIMARY ELECTION?. WAR VETERANS ARE NOT EXEMPTED FROM DEMOCRATIC PROCESSES IF THEY WANT TO HOLD POLITICAL OFFICE.GOVERNMENTS DO THEIR PART BUT FOR ANYONE TO CROSS THE LINE FROM BEING POOR TO RICH IT TAKES MORE OF PERSONAL EFFORT .STRIVE MASIYIWA STARTED HIS COMPANY WITH LESS THAN $100 DOLLARS BUT LOOK TODAY. EVEN IF YOUR CHAMISA WINS THE ELECTIONS THE POOR WILL ALWAYS BE THERE, ZANUPF YAMUNODAYI KUVENGA MUCHAIDEMBA VAZHINJI VENYU ANA BABA VENYU VAKADZIDZA MAHARA ZVICHIBVA MU ZANUPF. 24. How old is any war veteran right now. The war narrative cannot continue to hold us to ransom. We cannot be continuously obliged to look after the war veterans when they have forever defied logic and have supported the very same murderers that dupe them. They are in those situations out of mere choice. The worst thing to befall a war veteran is to do as they are told by their seniors so that ‘haubude mugwara’. Sad.

  25. He has spoken

The war was fought by everyone, with each playing a different role though the so called war veterans were at the forefront. The same war veterans were used to erode the gains of the struggle by their selfish friends for a paltry monthly allowance. Up until now they have not taken the resolve to escape from this made reality. To me they are sellouts who do not deserve any sympathy. This article saves to highlight their shallow minds and YES they will remain despondent.

  26. I am dusgrantled by the topic “war vets to die poor”. I would like to say that should be the war vets’ fault. My undertsanding is taht 90% of them were given farms which they are not utilizing.Mamines makatora, kumaparastatal muriko. Its only fair to think about all zimbabweans in general not one group of people. Jesus died for our sins not for him to benefit but for everyone. Saka these war vets are selfish they only.think about themselves.
Ndosaka kuine word rekuti sacrifice. Mawar vets vanoda kutsanangurirwa the meaning. Yes I appreciate what they did for us, but it was an individual choice. Pamwe dai takazvarwawo nguva iyoyo pamwe dai takatoendawo kuhondo. There are genuine war vets out there. You dont here them making noise. Anamafikizolo.ndovanoita noise. Mawar vets most of them are deceased and havana or their families chavakawana. Saka please mawar vets shandai

  27. When are we going to finish the debt called ‘takasunungura nyika’? Since independence we’ve endured unbudgeted expenditures and funds for war vets. They decided to trade their national appeal for a ZanuPf that steals people’s livelihoods.

Frankly, to hell with war vets. A progressive country is run with skilled people, not the ZanuPf circus we’ve endured since 1980. The party is thuggish. The ‘leaders’ spend more time rehearsing speeches they don’t even understand. Lords of meaningless vocabulary that impoverishes the nation.

  28. These so called War Vet are being used and dumped for sure kunge chikorobho, they are a confused lot who need to think outside the box , 38 yrs today being told lies but they don’t see light , they deserve to die poor and why is it their numbers are still high , so hapana vakafa muhondo , we have thugs who are claiming to be war vets and to be realistic everyone who was old enough that time plaid a role , so they must not see themselves as a special group of citizens in Zim . ICHO

  29. Mkoma Vabve Moza

Its a pity to see men and women of this status (WAR WET) living in abject poverty. During these elections they are happy as they are given $30 in their ecocash accounts to do the dirty job. I myself know NO INDEPENDENCE, was born under Mugabe’s Dictatorship up to now, I am still looking for independence and yet we have War Vets vasina kana kutengerwa ndwindwi naMugabe chaiye asi vanongoti pa ZANU ndipo. Surely, you will die poor and your contribution to the country has been reduced out of you barbaric acts over the last 38 years…. YOU WILL DIE VERY POOR, BUT BLOODY AND MURDEROUS USELESS OLD SOLDIERS.

  30. BUT AS I SEE Zanu PF IS WAR VETERIAN AND VISE VESA, SO WHO IS USING WHO?

  31. Zanu pf has been in power for almost 40 years and to find ourselves still addressing such issues clearly shows the leadership crisis we are having

    1. So so true 38 years is surely enough time to solve such issues

  32. TOOMEER HAKILI KIDOGO , MUGABE NA BANDARISHA CONSTITUTION TO COMMUNIST
RUDISHA CONSTITUTION TO BRITISH, SOME ONE INFORM MNANAGAGWA

    USE YOUR BRAINS A LITTLE

    1. What is it exactly are you FAILING to say ???? Do you need help articulate what it is you are trying to say…???

  33. SO THEY EXPECTED TO DIE RICH WITH WHAT MONEY? THEY HAVE BACKED AND SUPPORTED A CLUELESS PACK OF ECONOMY-DISTROYERS AT THE EXPENSE OF CLEAN GOVERNANCE FROM THE MANY ALTERNATIVES THAT PRESENTED THEMSELVES. THEY MUST ROT AND STARVE AND KNOW THAT ZIMBABWE WIĹL NEVER ACCORD THEM THE RESPECT THEY SHOULD OTHERWISE HAVE AS THEY DISINFRANCHISED THEMSELVES

  34. Michael Masanga

in other words they destroyed our economy, killed innocent civilians and perpetuated destructive tendencies and they are suffering?? I think its their vistims who are suffering rather. If they are suffering its because they made their bed and they should sleep in it. The source of suffering of all civilians are these so called war vets

  35. Have they ever tried the G.O.Y.A method. Get Off Your Arse. After 38 years, they are still whining like spoilt children. i thought most were intergrated into the army and civil service or chose their own method of employment. If they have nothing to show for their efforts after 38 years, then they deserve to be where they are.

  36. Why do they not try the G.O.Y.A method, which stands for Get Off Your Arse !!! After 38 years they are still whining like spoilt children. I thought most were intergrated into the army or civil service, or chose their own destination. If they have made nothing of their lives after 38 years, they deserve nothing.

  37. Simane Ndlovu

So far so good, you are the only person who have said what has to be said. Everybody who was a grown up during the war participated in the war against Smith. So lets stop wabbling about how to payback war vets. What about the ordinary citizen who carried the burden of feeding them, what of girls who were impregnated by these war vets? So if its taking care of war vets, then every citizen who suffered during the war must be compensated,

  38. Patrick Guramatunhu

    @ Isaac Mupinyuri

After 38 years of Zanu PF misrule unemployment has soared to 90%, ¾ of the people are living on US$1.00 or less a day, basic services like health and education have all but collapsed, etc. It is not surprising that many of the war veterans and even Zanu PF grandees like the late Nathan Shamuyarira and Enos Nkala have been caught in the rising tide of economic poverty.

After years of trading water, many of the rogue war veterans have regrouped and thrown their weight behind President Mnangagwa and his junta in the vain hope that the regime will save them from the ever rising tide of poverty. The regime is not going to revive the economy by reviving the party’s corrupt and wasteful political patronage system. President Mnangagwa has already promised the war veterans to review their pension and allowances and they, in return, are out in full force reminding the people they will be punished if they do not vote for Zanu PF.

By failing to hold free and fair elections the party has just confirms Zimbabwe is still a pariah state ruled by thugs. Zimbabwe’s economic recovery is wholly dependent casting away its pariah state status because no investors want to do business with thugs! The war veterans have learnt nothing from the country’s political blunders of the last 38 years and hence the reason they are hanging on to the same failed political system or be it with a new dictator. That is the tragedy of an oppressive and tyrannical dictatorship, the people are so brainwashed they are never given a chance to learn what went wrong and so a easily fooled into repeating the same mistakes over and over again.
