MDC-T recalls Harare mayor Manyenyeni

Harare City councillors yesterday recalled mayor Bernard Manyenyeni on allegations of not taking party orders in the discharge of his duties and replaced him with his deputy, Enock Mupamawonde.
MDC-T Harare provincial chairperson Erick Murai confirmed that Harare councillors – mostly from the opposition party – had passed a vote of no confidence in Manyenyeni on allegations that he was no longer co-operating with them and not following the wishes and aspirations of the opposition party.

“It is the councillors who came to the Harare executive requesting that Manyenyeni steps down. As the MDC-T, we have upheld that decision,” Murai said.

According to some councillors, Manyenyeni was being accused of intimidating workers through his statements on salary cuts as well as his approach on how service delivery ought to be handled.
“He has been speaking his mind and not the position of council. He is a dictator and does not consult fellow councillors. Most importantly, he does not want to take instructions from the party on issues to do with workers and council management,” a councillor who requested anonymity, said.

Girisoti Mandere, the council chief whip, said councillors met with the MDC-T Harare executive and agreed to recall Manyenyeni.

Attempts to get a comment from Manyenyeni were fruitless as his phone was unreachable.

Manyenyeni has been at war with some councillors over his leadership style.

He has also been critical of the quality and calibre of councillors, saying residents should vote for those who are educated – a statement that has caused discomfort among city fathers.

i have my reservations on the mayor’s leadership capabilities too

  3. Councillors, like workers everywhere else, must uplift themselves by going to school to improve their qualifications, there is more to gain from doing this.

  4. Manyenyeni is right, the calibre of the MDC councilors is questionable. the council salary bill is ridiculously abnormal and service delivery is poor. MDC should have fired the councilors not the mayor.

    1. He might be right but he had a corrupt mind also. How can a person knowingly leave a 10000 salary job to be paid 1500. In his mind he was thinking that a salary was nothing but corrupt deals would earn him millions but unfortunately he was starved off by others. In Auditing and Investigation if U face a manager who left his/her high paying job to a poorly paying one, its a red flag u should carry out 100% becoz sampling is not allowed

  5. Is the mayor supposed to uphold “the wishes and aspirations” of the party or that of the residence?????????? Kungo bvunzawo hanguuuu

  6. I have had the pleasure of knowing Ben more than thirty years. During the years of our acquaintance, I have known Ben in many capacities. Ben was a subordinate, executed himself well to be co-employee at senior and executive rolls and nicknamed “Esquire”. In the many years, I’ve known him, Ben has demonstrated great maturity and creativity.

In the 80s when I first met Ben he was professional and mature beyond his years. Ben came across as an intelligent, capable, dedicated, and personable individual, with sensible reactions in all the circumstances I’ve seen him in. I feel confident in saying that he is capable of handling any situation with thoughtfulness and maturity.
First off I have never known him to be in any kind of trouble, not with his bosses, co-employees, subordinates, family, or especially the law. In fact, he has always been community minded and has personally helped me without request in organising one personal event I will not mention for now.

It is therefore a big surprise I read this development which is not characteristic of this principled and of course comes across as an opinionated man. It’s a loss to the City.

    1. HE IS YOUR FRIEND FROM THE WAY U ARE TALKING, SO THERE IS NOTHING U CAN SAY. SINCE YOU ARE HIS FRIEND ALTHOUGH HE IS INTELLIGENT AND UPRIGHT AS HE IS TELL HIM IN DECISION MAKING ISSUES OF LAW ARE NOT DEBATABLE BUT JUST TO COMPLY. ARGUING WITH LAWS U JUST CAUSE COMMOTION NOT THE INTENDED OBJECTIVES. A stable society and economy starts with respecting the rule of law no matter who is being affected by that law.

  8. While Biggy is Bens character reference, I am of the opinion that Ben was in too deep and beyond his ability to run the council as mayor. From the comments I have come across in the public domain it appears as though this fella was arrogant and Mr know it all. So for Harare to progress pls allow him to step down.

  9. OH Shame Harare iya yazofa manje without Bernard disaster chaiyo mirai muone zvenyu vanhu vonwiswa zvekare mvura yemusewer netuma grade 3 councillors twuya.
