CAPS United could lose yet another key player after South African Premiership side Cape Town Ajax invited John Zhuwawo for a brief assessment.

Zhuwawo flew to South Africa yesterday afternoon for a three-day assessment by the Urban Warriors with reports suggesting that he had already impressed the technical team having watched some video footage of the player.

The South African giants have been closely monitoring the player, who joined Caps United from Gunners having been part of police side Black Mambas when they were still in the topflight league in 2011 before they were relegated to Division One.

Although Zhuwawo was only given the platform to showcase his talents at the later stage of the campaign following the departure of forwards Abbas Amidu and Ronald “Rooney” Chitiyo, he has scored five goals and contributed as many assists.

He is one of the best players in the air locally.

Zhuwawo was accompanied to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by Cape Town Ajax representative Patrick Mitangu. The Caps United forward will be assessed by the technical team from today till Thursday after which he will return home on Friday just in time for their last match against Highlanders.

His trip to South Africa appeared to have been thrown into jeopardy after he was stretchered off the pitch with a suspected knee injury during the second half of the Castle Lager Premiership tie against Bulawayo City.

The match ended in a goalless draw and marked the end of Caps United’s interest in the top four as they were left in fifth position with 57 points, four behind fourth-placed Chicken Inn with one match left before the end of the campaign.

This means even if they win their last match against Highlanders, it will not be good enough to end the season in fourth position because it will take their points tally to 60, one shy of Chicken Inn.

The Caps United forward expressed delight to be given the opportunity by the Urban Warriors and said he would make the most of it.

“It feels great to be afforded that kind of opportunity. It is the dream of every player, it lifts you up and I am very excited about it. I am going to try and make the most of it. I am going there for three days and will return on Friday. They have seen some of my video footage and I am sure they have an idea of the player they want,” said Zhuwawo shortly before departure.

Caps United were hit by a massive player exodus this season after their participation in the African Champions League in which they defied odds staked against them to go all the way to the group stage of the prestigious tournament.

They dumped out five- time African champions TP Mazembe from the tournament in the first round before beating another African football giant Zamalek 3-1 in Harare, a performance that saw several Caps United stars attracting interest from foreign clubs.

Those that have since left for greener pastures are Chitiyo, Amidu and Ronald Pfumbidzai. Chitiyo is now playing in Tunisia while Amidu and Pfumbidzai are playing in Saudi Arabia and South Africa respectively.
