Shoppers stormed Edgars as early as 8am yesterday in celebration of the Black Friday culture, which is normally associated with Western countries such as United States and Britain.

The country’s largest clothing retailer committed to Black Friday 2017 — from clothes , lingerie, homeware and footwear, with a fulfilment of great deals from all age groups.

“We did not anticipate this considering that Edgars doesn’t normally slash their prizes. It is unfortunate that we came late and most of the things had been sold out, but we managed to get something,” a resident said.

“Few people cannot afford to buy in this store because of its prestige. But we are happy that some of us have finally got an opportunity to do so.”

In other suburbs, it was being speculated that newly-sworn in President Emmerson Mnangagwa had ordered the price slash.

Most of the clothes had been sold out by lunchtime.

Other supermarkets in the resort town also slashed prices of perishables.

In Bulawayo, Edgars shops had a high activity.

When NewsDay Weekender arrived at an Edgars shop along Jason Moyo Avenue, people were seen picking clothes, whose prices had been slashed by up to 75%.

One of the shoppers said she was delighted that Black Friday, which is popular in South Africa, had finally been adopted by some in Zimbabwe.

“We have been hearing about Black Friday in other countries. I am so happy that it is now in Zimbabwe,” they said.

“I am already doing my shopping for the festive season. There are a lot of quality clothes at cheap prices. Thank you Edgars stores.”

Black Friday is regarded as the first official date of Christmas shopping. It comes on the day after Thanksgiving (an American holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of each November).

Retail shops offer promotional sales with discount of up to 90% worldwide.
