EIGHTEEN Zimbabweans have been awarded scholarships to study masters degrees at various universities in the United Kingdom under the Chevening Scholarship.

Speaking at a send-off ceremony on Thursday, British ambassador to Zimbabwe, Catriona Laing said.
the scholarship offered a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically.
“Zimbabwe and the UK share some common values, one of these being grounding in a good education. This aspect strengthens our bilateral relations,” she said.
“This scholarship programme is a demonstration of UK’s commitment to Zimbabwe’s human resource and to its future. In offering this prestigious scholarship, the UK is playing a role in ensuring that Zimbabweans have the skill and knowledge to contribute to their country’s development and future.
“To our Chevening recipients tonight, by becoming a Zimbabwean Chevening Scholar, you become an ambassador for leadership, knowledge and have an important role to play in building bridges between Zimbabwe and the UK.”
A total of 43 000 applicants submitted for the 2016/17 intake.

Among those who succeeded include civic and human rights activists, Tendai Muchada, Gladys Hlatywayo, Francis Rwodzi and Fortune Nyamande.
The scholarship, which has been running for the past 33 years, is funded by the UK government. It has scholars from over 160 countries, who are selected annually to study in various fields.
There are also plans to introduce an active network of Chevening Alumni in the country.
