Bekezela Masuku (44) was not asked to plead when he appeared before provincial magistrate Tendai Mahwe and was remanded in custody to August 18.

However, Masuku submitted an affidavit denying the charge and indicated he was only hired by the “cops” as he was a taxi driver based in Mbare.

He further stated he charged the suspects $30 and was surprised when he was paid $1 000 which was thrown into his motor vehicle seat by another suspect Dickson Morosi.

Masuku’s arrest brings the total number of suspects rounded up so far over the heist to six.

According to the State, on July 26 at around 2pm Masuku and his co-accused persons Morosi, Kundai Makwarimba, Fortune Sibanda and six others who are still at large, connived and robbed Junaid Pervaiz.

The State alleges this was done after the suspects received inside information that Pervaiz was carrying large sums of money from his business premises to his residence in Belvedere.

Acting in common purpose, it is alleged, the suspects drove in two motor vehicles, a Toyota Spacio and Honda Fit, which had no registration plates.

They allegedly waylaid Pervaiz along Hudson Road in Belvedere after mounting a fake roadblock and robbed him of his cash.

Audrey Chogumaira appeared for the State.
