ZIMBABWE Junior Golf Association (ZJGA) president Brian Maphosa has praised the national junior team after their qualification for the prestigious Toyota Junior Golf World Cup to be held in Japan later this year.

The national junior team comprising Jack Allard, Kieran Vincent, David Amm and Bekithemba Ndlovu booked the ticket to the global showpiece for the second consecutive year after finishing second at the All-Africa Junior Golf Championships in Zambia on Friday.

Regional powerhouses South Africa dominated the continental championships with an emphatic 55 stroke victory as they claimed their 17th successive title at Lusaka Golf Club.

“Our boys did us proud, qualifying for the Toyota World Junior Golf Cup to be played in Nagoya, Japan,” Maphosa said.

“This was after coming second again to the South African team. The two countries will represent the continent at this tourney. I must mention that in the tourney’s 23-year history only Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya and Morocco have ever played in that tourney. Morocco and Kenya have played only once each.”

The South African team posted a final round 222 on a tough scoring day at the Lusaka Golf Club on Friday to complete a wire-to-wire victory on two-under-par 874. Zimbabwe combined for a 233 on the last day to edge out hosts Zambia for second place by seven strokes on 929.

The silver medallists will join South Africa for a second year running at the prestigious Junior Golf World Cup in Japan later this year.

The Toyota Junior Golf World Cup, which follows a four-players-count-three scores format, will consist of four rounds played June 16-19.

Widely regarded as the world’s only junior golf championship, the competition features winners of regional qualifiers held across six continents.
