COMBINED Mutare Residents and Ratepayer’s Trust (CMRRT) will soon embark on a 19-day sponsored walk from Mutare to Masvingo then Harare in a bid to raise resources for the Tokwe-Mukorsi flood victims.

The sponsored walk, which will cover approximately 560km, is targeted at raising about $200 000.

At least seven people are set to take part in the walk, which is scheduled to start on May 21 ending on June 9 this year.

It has already been cleared by the police.

According to the letter of appeal signed by CMRRT programmes manager David Mukunda dated April 7, the sponsored walk seeks to raise building materials, clothes, blankets, foodstuffs and money for the displaced victims.

Mukunda told NewsDay yesterday that they were motivated to embark on the sponsored walk after hearing of the plight faced by the flood victims, who are camped at Chingwizi Transit camp without enough food, clothes and shelter.

“It’s our duty as residents’ representatives to mobilise resources for people who are suffering,” said Mukunda. “The flood victims are at their lowest at the moment and we believe the spirit of oneness should prevail.”

He added: “Every concerned citizen should be seen doing something to help those in need. We hear that there is food shortage, disease, shortage of blankets and clothing for people camped at Chingwizi transit camp.”

In a letter dated April 5 2014, police granted the residents permission on condition that participants will not disturb traffic along the road and be confined to the stipulated routes and dates.

“The sponsored walk shall be held on 21/05/14 along Mutare-Masvingo highway and then Harare on 9th of June, 2014,” read part of the letter of permission.

“The sponsored-walk shall be restricted to the confines of the above stated routes on the stipulated dates.

“Abide by the rules and regulations of the road traffic and other laws of the country.“

Mukunda urged the corporate world, churches, residents and the international community to donate in cash or kind towards helping the Tokwe-Mukorsi flood victims.
