The national U-19 team will play six matches against hosts India, Australia and South Africa from September 23 to October 5 in preparation for next February’s ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in Dubai.

Chawaguta, who took over from former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Harris, said he would name his squads after national trials to be held at St Georges College from Tuesday to Friday next week.

“We have been preparing with a squad of 46 young players and they will be taking part in national trials from Tuesday to Friday next week at St Georges College.

“After the trials, we will select a squad of 30 players to prepare for the World Cup in Dubai next year and 15 players to take part at the Quadrangular Series in India next month,” said the former Zimbabwe senior national team coach. Chawaguta said the quadrangular series in India will give his charges a chance to test their level of preparedness ahead of the World Cup.

“It will be a very good platform for us to measure our level of preparedness as we will play against very strong sides. I’m sure we will do well as we have a number of experienced players in the side who were part of the previous campaign,” he said.

Chawaguta’s current squad has five players who were part of last year’s squad, namely Malcolm Lake, Luke Jongwe, Cuthbert Musoko and Ryan Burl.

Zimbabwe will be hoping for a better display at the previous edition of the World Cup in Australia where they finished 15th out of 16 teams.
