CHEGUTU — Eleven unidentified armed robbers ambushed and subdued four security guards manning a Delta Beverages depot along the Chakari-Chegutu Road and got away with $39 636 cash on Monday night.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara yesterday confirmed the robbery and said investigations were in progress.

Police said on July 23 at around midnight, 11 unknown men, armed with a suspected FN rifle and a pistol, gained entry into the premises by scaling the precast wall.

They reportedly manhandled four security guards, ordered them to lie down, robbed them of the safe keys and personal belongings before beating them up with an iron bar.

The gang allegedly recovered safe keys from one of the guards whom they also robbed of two personal cellphones before pouncing on the other three guards and assaulted them with an iron bar leaving them unconscious.

“The robbers went into the cashier’s office where they unlocked the Chubb safe, opened it with the stolen key and stole $36 636. They locked the safe before fleeing from the scene,” Mabgweazara said.

Police said the guards later regained consciousness and reported the matter to the depot manager identified as Langton Chagonda and Chegutu police.
