KWEKWE – Zvishavane town engineer Moses Chiraya and his wife Ruth Teera were arrested in Kwekwe on Monday after they allegedly kidnapped two police officers and later pushed them out of their moving vehicle.

The pair appeared at the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday facing kidnapping and attempted murder charges.

Magistrate Tendai Mchini remanded them in custody to July 31.

The State alleged that on July 16, constables Rebecca Nyamidzi and Listen Ngirazi met Chiraya and Teera at the Kwekwe Civil Court and advised them that they were being placed under arrest for practising bigamy.

Chiraya allegedly complied and offered to drive the officers to the police station for compilation of the charge sheet.

When the pair got into the car, Chiraya drove as if heading towards Kwekwe Central Police Station, but sped off along the Gweru Road with the police officers on board.

When he got near the Golden Mile Motel, Chiraya allegedly opened the passenger door where Nyamidizi was seated and pushed her out and she landed on the hard tarmac road.

The couple sped off along the same road before Teera opened the other passenger door and shoved out Ngirazi from the moving vehicle.

Both officers allegedly suffered injuries and were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital for treatment. The couple was later arrested that same day, but it is not clear how.

Chiraya has had a long-running dispute with his estranged first wife Maria Nyarai Chiraya who at one time took him to court for failing to pay $4 000 in arrears of maintenance fees. She is behind the bigamy charge where she is accusing her husband of getting married to Teera before formally divorcing her.

Salome Maunganidze appeared for the State.
