A dubious penalty in the second half saved Buffaloes from the jaws of defeat against Gunners in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League at Sakubva Stadium yesterday.

The match was almost abandoned when some of the Gunners players walked out of the pitch after Rusape-based referee Robert Mugorosa awarded a controversial penalty in the 75th minute when their defender Fungai Chirinda cleared the ball from the line, but was adjudged to have used his hands.

The match was stopped for six minutes, but Gunners boss Cuthbert Chitima had to intervene for his players to continue with play.

Gunners coach Thanks Tengwe was red carded for protesting and Chirinda was also shown the exit door for the offence. Buffaloes captain Dananai Chinowawa converted the controversial penalty.

The army team took the lead in the 17th minute through midfieder Lloyd Katongomara after he headed home a Chinowawa corner kick. Gunners restored parity in the 30th minute through a ferocious shot from Munyaradzi Chiwara after Buffaloes defenders had failed to clear a loose ball.

Substitute Charles Makuruva, who came in for Chiwara, scored in the 63th minute with his first touch of the ball to give the Harare side the lead before the controversial decision.

Tengwe said he knew that the army squad was going to be given a penalty.

From what we gathered, we knew that they were going to get a penalty . . . What kind of refereeing is that? he asked.
