LUPANE — A 40-year-old man from Sobenhle village who had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl was on Thursday jailed for 30 months.
Themba Nduna pleaded not guilty to charges of having sex with an underage girl when he appeared before Lupane magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba. But the magistrate found him guilty.
Passing sentence, Gwazemba said Nduna endangered the young girl’s life by having unprotected sex with her.
The court was told that on December 31 last year, Nduna approached the girl’s aunt, saying he was interested in her.
The aunt complied and the girl accepted the proposal.
On January 1 in the evening, the girl was sent by her parents to the business centre where she met her aunt and Nduna.
The aunt took the girl along a bushy path where Nduna followed and brought the girl a soft drink and gave her money to buy food.
Nduna took the girl into the bush where he became intimate with her.

After the act, the girl did not go back home fearing her parents would beat her up for coming home late. She went to stay at a relative’s home in the village for five days.
When she returned home, she confessed to her parents what she had done with Nduna. The matter was reported to the police leading to Nduna’s arrest.
In denying the charge, Nduna said he proposed to the girl and intended to marry her, but did not sleep with her.
On her part, the girl insisted she accepted Nduna’s proposal and slept with him.
A medical report by a doctor confirmed the girl had been sexually active.
