Leinster have put Northampton prop Brian Mujati’s allegations of racism by two of their players down to a misinterpretation.

The 26-year-old Zimbabwean-born former Springbok claimed via his Twitter account on Saturday that Leinster forwards Heinke van der Merwe and Steven Sykes and called him a “baboon” during Friday’s pre-season friendly between the two clubs.

Mujati later deleted his postings. It is believed that the two South Africans have denied the allegations. In a statement released on Sunday, the Irish club insisted Mujati had “misinterpreted” the exchange.

“Following the allegations made by a Northampton Saints player in the aftermath of Friday night’s friendly between Leinster Rugby and Northampton Saints, Leinster Rugby acknowledge that there was an exchange during the match between two Leinster players which was misinterpreted,” read the statement.

“It was regrettable that any offence was caused. Both clubs have agreed that the matter is now closed and will now focus on preparing for their respective league campaigns.”
