Police will today launch a blitz targeting foreign-registered buses and overloading public vehicles, as the festive season begins.
National Traffic Police spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome said the blitz, code-named Operation Wapinda Sei, will see foreign-registered buses which at times use fake permits being impounded while Operation Takurai Vakakwana is to pounce on overloading transporters.
“We are targeting foreign-registered buses which are plying routes from neighbouring countries.
Some are using fake permits while others come into the country without following the proper clearance procedure at the border posts thereby depriving the government of revenue,” said Chigome.
He added: “We are going to impound all buses found on the wrong side of the law and they are only going to be released after the owner has come to clear those buses.”
The operation will involve Zimra, the Transport Ministry and the Vehicle Inspection Department. “We know when the festive season is approaching, people want to cash in and end up flouting rules of the road.”
Chigome said: “We are approaching the festive season so people will be overloading their kombis which will cause more accidents. So we are saying no to overloading.
We are going to impound the vehicles that would have overloads after having paid fines.”
