LADIES star Fadzai Mawisire did Zimbabwe proud by winning the Castle Lite Uganda Open at the Kampala Club Tennis Courts on Saturday, walking away with 2 million shillings, courtesy of Nile Breweries.

Mawisire, who is trained by her father Zebedia at the Municipal Sports Club in Bulawayo, emphatically cruised past Megan Ingabire of Rwanda in the final beating her in two straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to romp to victory in the tournament which was sponsored to the tune of 40 million shillings with the prize money pegged at 20, 5 million shillings for the winners in different categories.
The Bulawayo-born 25-year-old tennis ace, also won the final in the mixed doubles 6-1, 6-1 with her Ugandan partner Henry Muyanja as they beat Joie Keter from Kenya with efforts to get the name of the Kenyan’s partner fruitless.
Mawisire sailed through to the finals easily after she beat Ayato Mackenzie from Uganda with a resounding 6-0, 6-0 in the first round on Wednesday.
She bundled out Keter 6-1, 6-0 in the quarter-finals on Thursday before easing past Shuffa Changwa from Kenya 6-1, 6-2 in the semi-final on Friday.
Her compatriot from Bulawayo Municipal Sports Club, Bural Munkombwe did not do well in the competition as she fell out in the early stages of the tournament.
Before the tournament, the 18-year-old Munkombwe told media in Uganda that she was at the competition to gain exposure.

“It is a great experience for me out here and I am happy that I will be able to learn a new thing or two. By next year I will come back to Kampala with the required experience to compete for honours,” Munkombwe said.
Mawisire, who attended her tertiary education in the United States at Lindsey Wilson College, where she played tennis, comes from a family that is in love with the sport.
Her three sisters, Vimbai, Tafadzwa and Takudzwa are also tennis players. Vimbai and Tafadzwa are currently studying in the US while Takudzwa will soon be taking part in the Matabeleland Open.
Zebedia, their father, is the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Tennis Board coaches’ chairman.
The Castle Lite Uganda Open which attracted players from Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and Cameroon, was bankrolled by Nile Breweries and Housing Finance Bank.
