ZIMBABWE’S leading female rower, Micheen Thornycroft will be hoping to keep her medal hopes on track when she competes in the semi-finals of the Rio Olympic Games at the Lagoa Rowing Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, today.

Thornycroft will line up in lane two of the first women’s singles sculls A/B semi-finals today at 3:10pm (Zimbabwe time), where the first three finishers in the race will qualify for the final.
The 29-year-old singles sculler, who is participating in her second Olympics after her debut in London four years ago, will be in elite company in the semi-final race, as she will be joined by some of the world’s top female rowers.
Some of the athletes, who will join Thornycroft in the first of the two A/B semi-finals include Australian world champion and Olympic medal-winning rower, Kimberley Brennan, and New Zealand’s three-time Olympian Emma Twigg.
The other top rowers who will also be hoping to grab one of the three slots include Mexico’s Kenia Alanis, Jeanine Gmelin from Switzerland and Canada’s Carling Zeeman.
Thornycroft will be eager to carry on with the form she showed on her way to qualifying for the semi-finals of the women’s single sculls on Tuesday.
The Wedza-bred former Peterhouse Girls student finished second in her quarter-final in a time of 7:34.38, with Fie Udby Erichsen of Denmark taking first place in 7:33.24.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean shottist, Mike Nicholson failed to progress to the semi-finals of the men’s double trap shooting competition after finishing 19th out of 22 participants at the Olympic Shooting Centre in Rio on Wednesday.
Nicholson, who struggled to adjust to the tough rainy conditions, shot a total of 119 in the preliminary round to miss out on one of the seven automatic places for the semi-finals, which were held yesterday.
