‘I need soldiers now’ - Mpofu demands a siege mentality for Simba Bhora’s title assault

For Mandla Mpofu, the second half of the season is not just a continuation of a campaign, but a call to arms.

The Simba Bhora head coach, who took the reins at the start of the year, has overseen a season of bewildering inconsistency. The 2024 league champions experienced a sluggish start, peaked spectacularly to dominate the title conversation, and then plummeted into a recent slump that brought intense scrutiny to the dugout.

A crucial midweek 1-0 victory over Ngezi Platinum Stars arrested a damaging five-match winless streak that had begun to threaten Mpofu’s job.

Now, as his side prepares to host relegation-struggling Manica Diamonds at Wadzanayi Stadium tomorrow afternoon in a fixture that looks winnable on paper, Mpofu is demanding a radical shift in his players’ psychological approach.

"Second round is going to be even tougher," Mpofu warned, laying down a fierce ultimatum to his squad. "We need to soldier on. I need soldiers now. I need players who will die on the pitch. I need people who are ready to die for this project going forward."

The psychological toll of Simba Bhora’s recent dip has not been lost on the former Highlanders coach, who acknowledged that the expectations surrounding the former league champions had begun to weigh heavily on his shoulders before the midweek reprieve.

"Obviously, there is pressure in every game, especially after going five games without a win," Mpofu admitted. "Pressure was mounting, but it doesn't change me as a coach. But at the end of the day, we managed to win against Ngezi which was important for me as a coach, and the whole team. Our oneness, our togetherness, and our fighting spirit managed to give us the three points."

While the coach has shouldered the blame during their fallow period, the reality of Simba Bhora’s stuttering form is deeply intertwined with a crippling injury crisis and a recurring disciplinary problem.

Club captain Blessing Moyo has barely featured this term, while wingback Roland Kangadze is yet to kick a ball all season. Further complicating matters, the Namibian duo of Damaseb and Petrus Simaneka have been perpetually in and out of the treatment room, denying the team any real sense of tactical continuity.

Compounding these injury woes is a frustrating lack of discipline, with key figures frequently sidelined after accumulating unnecessary yellow cards.

"One of the factors why we struggled is the injury list," Mpofu explained. "Every week, I have had two crucial players injured or on suspension. It's something that I need to talk to the players in terms of getting unnecessary cards. Against Ngezi we didn't play with one of our key players Butholezwe Ncube because of suspension. Then Petrus and Damaseb are injured. So every week we have had some challenges. But its just a phase so maybe in the second half of the season, we'll get better and try to get positive results as much as possible."

To sustain a genuine, aggressive onslaught on the title in the second round of fixtures, Mpofu recognizes that his current squad requires reinforcement.

The coach intends to dip into the transfer market, though he insisted he will not be panicked into making filler signings.

"If we can get at least three quality players... because we can't compromise quality, I think we can move forward well," he said.

Ultimately, Mpofu’s ability to survive the period of discontent owes much to the forbearance of those above and around him.

He concluded his pre-match thoughts by offering gratitude to the club’s hierarchy led by club president Simba "Buju" Ndoro and the Shamva supporters for standing by him when the trajectory of the season seemed entirely derailed.

"I want to thank them," Mpofu said. "They've been patient even when results weren't coming. There is light at the end, there is hope with the project. So we will soldier on and try to make sure that we play for them."
