PHD leader Walter Magaya has joined the fight against drug and substance abuse and will establish a rehabilitation centre at his Yadah Complex in Waterfalls, Harare.

Magaya is also constructing a 20 000-seater stadium at his complex, which already boasts of modern hotel facilities.

The first phase of the stadium, christened the Heart Stadium, is complete and will be commissioned on Sunday.

High ranking government officials will officially open the stadium, which is expected to host premier league and international games next year.

In a statement, Magaya revealed that plans are already in place to establish a drug rehabilitation centre as he hopes to make the complex an all-purpose facility.

“We are in the process of establishing a rehabilitation centre at Yadah Hotel dubbed Gain Life, in an effort to lessen substance abuse in our country hence the stadium will afford the youngsters an opportunity to utilise the facility as a way of substituting drug abuse with sporting activities,” he said.

Zimbabwe is currently struggling with a problem of drug addiction which is affecting mostly the young people.

Existing rehabilitation centres are failing to cope with rising demand for counselling and rehabilitation services.

Authorities are aware of the crisis and President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned against  the “unbecoming trends” threatening “the fate of our youth”, stressing the urgent need to “redouble our collective fight against this new phenomenon”.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have since last year embarked on an operation targeting drug havens and peddlers.
