THE Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) is still to set a date for the hearing of appeals by Asiagate victims after the appeals committee failed to convene last Friday.

The appeals committee, which is expected to go through the heads of arguments submitted by the appellants, was last week expected to set a date for the hearing of the appeals.

However, Zifa lawyer Ralph Maganga yesterday said the appeals committee failed to meet as one of the members was outside the country.

He said they had now rescheduled the meeting to this week.

“The appeals committee failed to meet last week as some members had commitments. The chairman was in Kenya as part of the observer team for the elections there.

The meeting has now been rescheduled to this week. The appeals committee will come up with the dates for the appeal cases to be heard at that meeting.

“We are aware the appellants want their cases to be heard as soon as possible for them to plan. We have also been pushing to have their cases heard for purposes of planning.

“But once the dates are set, it will not take more than two days for the hearings to be completed because the cases are few,” Maganga said.

At least seven players and officials have appealed against life and long-term bans they were handed by Zifa for involvement in the match-fixing scam in Asia between 2007 and 2010 after paying an appeal fee of $6 000.

Caps United coach Taurai Mangwiro and former Shabanie Mine coach Luke Masomere are some of the officials who have appealled against the bans.

Former Dynamos and Warriors mentor Sunday Chidzambwa, now coaching in South Africa, has also appealled against his ban from football activities.

Bidvest Wits defender Thomas Sweswe, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Method Mwanjali and Dynamos defender Guthrie Zhokinyu have also paid their appeals fees, and so has Herald  Sports Editor Robson Sharuko.
