Now international media are reporting that a decision to stop counting photos and links in the 140 character limit is due to be announced in the next few weeks, giving users more freedom to tweet longer messages.

Bloomberg Technology is reporting that the company will announce that photos and links will no longer form part of the limit imposed on the social media platform.

It forms part of larger discussions to increase the character limit as a whole, reports the tech site.

CEO Jack Dorsey in January announced that Twitter was experimenting with new ways to explore the “display text on Twitter” as well as investigate how people use the service.

At around the same time a 10 000 word limit was bandied about on social media, but critics soon zoomed in saying that it would negatively affect the platform as its main purpose when it launched was that a tweet should be able to fit into a mobile text message.

There has been much talk about Twitter dying, with the hashtag #RIPTwitter cropping up every now and then as financial reports revealed a massive decline in both revenue and users to the site. Under Dorsey, who rejoined Twitter in October 2015, the social media platform has placed a renewed focus on live video reportedly paying a hefty $10 million to the National Football League to stream events.
