Individuals and organisations will tomorrow be honoured in recognition of their contribution towards the growth and development of the modelling and fashion industry at the second edition of the Zimbabwe Models Awards ceremony.

The awards, to be held at a popular upmarket club Pabloz Club & VIP Lounge at Borrowdale’s Sam Levy’s Village in Harare, are the brainchild of former modelling guru, Mercy “Catwalk” Mushaninga.

Speaking to NewsDay yesterday, Mushaninga said the event would be held in memory of the late modelling guru and Miss Zimbabwe Trust patron, Kiki Divaris.

“This year’s awards have registered a growth, with five new categories having been added. The response has been overwhelming, as many of the models have responded. Among the new categories, we have also added is the Most Educated Model award so that we can encourage our upcoming models to take education seriously,” she said.

“We are committed to honour those who excel and it’s exciting to see a lot of them (models) doing well in their separate careers, with the likes of Tracey-Anne Buckley, who did well at the Mrs Universe, Kuda Mapeture, who became Miss Deaf Africa’s first princess, only to mention, but a few.”

Mushaninga said as a way of supporting local designers, some of them would showcase their latest designs at the ceremony.

There are about 50 categories and Divaris will be honoured posthumously if she makes it among the nominees — Hilda Mulenga, Malaika Mushandu, Black Opal, Nyasha Matonhodze and May 4 — in the Special Awards Category.

In the Most Curvaceous Model category, Brenda Chikaza will battle it out with Shelly Pope, Mariah Latoya Kewalram and Kundai Manjonjo, while former Miss Harare Junior, Yolanda Chimbarami will square it off with Floret Chikowe in the Outstanding Charity Project.

The woman behind Jan Jam Fashion boutique, Cythia Bizure Sithole, Vannessa Chiyangwa Chironga and Zodwa Mnkandla are nominees in the Most Flamboyant Female category.

Nominees vying for honours in the Best Promotional Model are Debra Mutowa, Candice Mwakalyelye, Fungai Charlyn Majaya and Nancy Dzviti with Tacey-Anne Buckley up against Tanya Taderera and Michelle Snowden in the Best International Model category.
