The Bulawayo City Council has suspended refuse collection services in some suburbs due to fuel shortages, town clerk Christopher Dube said yesterday in a notice to residents.
“The City of Bulawayo would like to advise residents that there may be an interruption in the collection of refuse due to fuel shortage. Residents are advised that the areas likely to be affected include Makokoba, Riverside, Sunninghill, Waterford, Selbourne Park and Belmont Industrial Area,” Dube said.
“Council is working on ensuring speedy delivery of fuel supplies so as to resume normal services. Residents are encouraged to keep the city clean and desist from dumping refuse in open spaces.”
Dube implored residents to keep uncollected refuse within their properties saying it would be collected when service resumed.
“Limited supplies of fuel are also affecting our response to water and sewage faults. BCC wishes to apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the notice read.
Most service stations in Bulawayo have had no fuel since the weekend.
Service delivery has been crippled in other cities including Harare, where refuse has not been collected for close to a month in some areas.
