An 87-year-old woman from Chiwundura axed a 29-year-old man who had allegedly tried to rape her.
The man, Reward Maredzwa, appeared before Gweru magistrate Pathekile Msipa Thursday facing charges of unlawful entry and attempted rape.
The court heard that on March 24, Maredzwa broke into Violet Bhebhe’s bedroom at midnight and sneaked into her blankets with the intention of raping her.
He allegedly got hold of Bhebhe’s throat and strangled her.
In the ensuing mêleé, Maredzwa pulled her dress up.
As they struggled Bhebhe pulled up an axe from underneath her bed and struck him once on the chin.
Maredzwa started bleeding but kept on struggling with the octogenarian until they were outside the room on the veranda.
Bhebhe cried out for help from fellow villagers, but by the time her neighbours arrived Maredzwa had already fled from the scene.
