A 60–year- old man from Gokwe was on Wednesday jailed for three years for cultivating 168 plants of mbanje and possessing 25g of the processed drug.

Windros Kanyemba of Ngondo Village under Chief Njelele was convicted on his own plea of guilty to cultivation and unlawful possession of dagga when he appeared before Gokwe resident provincial magistrate Shepherd Mjanja.

Six months of his sentence were conditionally suspended for three years. Charges against Kanyemba were that on October 11, police received information that he was dealing in mbanje.

They went to his homestead, identified themselves and demanded to conduct a search at the homestead. After searching, they found a plastic sachet with the illegal drug and arrested Kanyemba.

After interrogation, he disclosed that he was the one who was cultivating the drug.

Kanyemba led the police to his garden, where they recovered 168 plants with an average height of 1,6 metres. He was taken to the police station and the dagga in the sachet was valued at $25, but the plants were not valued.
