Wilson Winston was sentenced to an effective 12-year term when pleaded guilty to the offence.

Prosecutor Tariro Shirichena proved that sometime in February this year, Winston broke into the complainant’s bedroom and raped her. Taking advantage of the woman’s mental status, he promised to bring her a bird as compensation.

However, the abuse came to light last month when the woman spilled the beans to her sister who immediately confronted Winston over the issue.

Winston admitted the offence and offered her a goat so that the matter would not be reported to police.

However, the woman’s sister spurned the offer and made a police report, leading to Winston’s arrest.

In passing sentence, Tsikwa said a lengthy custodial sentence met the justice of the crime.
