Mrisho Hamishi Haruna and Henry Ngosso Augustino were convicted on their own pleas of guilty when they appeared before Mutare magistrate Sekai Chiundura last week. They were sentenced yesterday after they were vetted by Interpol and found to be first-time offenders.

The court heard that on April 13, police detectives received a tip-off that the two men were booked at a lodge in the city and were in possession of suspected fake US dollar notes.

On raiding the room, police recovered 200 darkened bond papers cut into US dollar notes size resembling US currency. The two told the court that they were in the eastern border city to make transactions with a Mozambican national who they said had supplied them with the fake notes.

They claimed to have met him in Tanzania where he had gone to collect his imported vehicle.
