MYSTERY surrounds the status of suspended Harare town clerk Tendai Mahachi, after he allegedly defied his recent suspension and reported for duty yesterday.
BY MOSES MATENGA
Mahachi was sent on forced leave last week by mayor Bernard Manyenyeni to expedite his succession at Town House and investigate the executives “obscene salaries” in his absence.
“I am not doing a cat-and-mouse game with him. I have heard he was there from other people calling to confirm, but I don’t know whether he was there for long or what,” Manyenyeni said, adding he would investigate the matter today.
Officials told NewsDay that Mahachi reported for duty after his lawyers appealed to the Local Government Board chaired by Pisirai Kwenda.
The renewed fights at Town House came as Ignatius Chombo, long believed to be blowing the wind beneath Mahachi’s wings, was reassigned from the Local Government ministry to Home Affairs in a mini-Cabinet reshuffle announced yesterday. Zanu PF political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere is now the new Local Government minister.
It remains to be seen how Kasukuwere will deal with the Mahachi issue and the confusion at Harare Town House.
