Zimbos, Batswana clash in Botswana

Botswana have expressed concern over escalating tensions between Batswana residents and Zimbabwean nationals in Mogoditshane

AUTHORITIES in Botswana have expressed concern over escalating tensions between Batswana residents and Zimbabwean nationals in Mogoditshane following a series of violent clashes that left several people injured.

The disturbances reportedly began on Saturday at Manyanda Bar in the Sentomole ward of Mogoditshane amid growing accusations by some local residents that foreign nationals, particularly Zimbabweans, are contributing to rising criminal activity in the area.

Mogoditshane Acting Police Station Commander Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi confirmed the incidents and warned that the situation could deteriorate further if calm is not restored.

“It is alleged that a group of Zimbabwean nationals locked Batswana inside the bar and assaulted them. Stones were allegedly thrown during the altercation, resulting in damage to the bar’s windows,” Ramaphoi said.

Police have since opened a malicious damage to property case following a complaint lodged by the bar owner.

No arrests have been made, and investigations are continuing.

According to police, tensions escalated on Sunday when a group of locals allegedly moved around the area targeting foreign nationals at their homes and assaulting them individually.

One Zimbabwean man was reportedly left unconscious following the attacks and was rushed to Princess Marina Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

Another violent confrontation reportedly erupted on Sunday night, again at Manyanda Bar, prompting police intervention.

Officers rescued two Zimbabwean men who had allegedly been severely assaulted.

“Police responded promptly and rescued the two men, who had sustained serious injuries,” Ramaphoi said.

“We are appealing to both Batswana and Zimbabwean nationals to exercise restraint and maintain peace before the situation deteriorates further.”

Ramaphoi urged the public not to take the law into their own hands and instead allow law enforcement agencies to deal with criminal matters through established legal processes.

Police investigations into the incidents are ongoing, with authorities closely monitoring the situation amid fears that further violence could occur if tensions are not defused.
