Zimbabwe @ 46: long weekend packed with festivals, sport and outdoor escapes

Life & Style

HARARE, Apr. 17 (NewsDay Live) – As Zimbabwe marks its 46th Independence Day on Saturday, the long weekend offers far more than the official state ceremony in Maphisa, with a diverse lineup of events catering to all tastes across the country.

While thousands are expected to travel to Maphisa in Matobo District for the main commemorations, those remaining in urban centres particularly Harare have a wide selection of alternatives, led by the highly anticipated Upenyu Festival.

Positioned as a high-energy music and lifestyle showcase, Upenyu Festival blends amapiano, afro-house and soulful sounds in what organisers are billing as a marquee outdoor event. It takes place on Saturday, April 18 at Lifestyle Park in Chishwasha, with gates opening at 12PM and performances running through to 11:30PM.

Award-winning Zimbabwean artist Sha Sha headlines the event, returning to perform before a projected capacity crowd. Organisers have also hinted at three surprise acts, adding intrigue to an already strong lineup. Backed by Nyaradzo Group through its events and lifestyle unit Seal, the festival is expected to deliver a premium entertainment experience.

For early risers, the 2026 Independence Run begins at 5:30AM at Hellenic Sports Club, offering a fitness-driven start to the holiday.

Activity continues into Sunday, with Music in the Park in Mt Pleasant from 10:00AM providing a relaxed, family-oriented setting. Motorsport fans can head to Donnybrook Motor Race Track for Round 1 of the 2026 Harare Drag Races.

Meanwhile, outdoor enthusiasts can opt for the Meet and Camp experience at Darwendale Recreational Park on Saturday evening, combining social activity with an overnight escape just outside the capital.
