VICTORIA FALLS, Feb. 25 (NewsDay Live) — Vice President Constantino Chiwenga on Wednesday officially opened the SADC 2026 Sustainable Energy Week, urging the region to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and leverage regional cooperation to drive economic growth.
The week-long event, which began on Monday, runs until Friday under the theme “Driving Regional Economic Growth through Clean Energy Efficiency” in the resort town.
In his address, Chiwenga called on Southern Africa to harness opportunities presented by technological transformation and the global energy transition.
“As we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Southern Africa must not be a spectator to this transition. We must shape it,” he said.
Chiwenga said the platform brings together policymakers, energy experts, academics, financiers, industry leaders and other key stakeholders from across the region and beyond to collaborate on sustainable energy solutions.
“This high-level convergence clearly signals one thing: the region is ready to move from dialogue to delivery. Zimbabwe deeply values the initiatives led by SADC in promoting sustainable energy development, regional cooperation, capacity building and knowledge sharing,” he said.
The SADC Sustainable Energy Week has become a key fixture on the regional energy calendar, providing a forum for stakeholders to discuss strategies to enhance energy security, expand access to clean and affordable energy, and attract investment in renewable technologies.
Organised by the Southern African Development Community Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE), the conference brings together policymakers, energy experts, industry leaders, financiers, academics and other stakeholders from across the region.
