Marange headman granted peace order in cyber-bullying case

A HEADMAN in Chief Marange’s area has been granted a peace order against a man he accuses of cyber-bullying and interference with his official duties.

William Tendai Chanakira, the headman of Chanakira area, successfully obtained the order from Mutare magistrate Thandiwe Sibanda against Sony Manyande.

In his court application, Chanakira alleged that Manyande has been using electronic communication to harass him and undermine his authority.

He claimed that Manyande is a “hired criminal content creator” employed by a woman named Iyanai Chanakira in a plot to secure a criminal conviction against him, which disqualifies him as a headman.

According to court papers, Manyande, an Assistant Inspector Mbengo of ZRP Marange and Iyanai, attempted to prevent the applicant from prosecuting the latter for causing violence during the headman assembly on May 4, 2025.

However, with the involvement of a provincial police official, the applicant was able to charge Iyanai in case CR19/6/2025.

“Respondent is cyber-bullying applicant and interfering in my work in my jurisdiction as explained in my founding affidavit,” the court papers read.

“Applicant is in possession of recorded audios of respondent where he vowed to dethrone applicant from headmanship post through a criminal conviction.

“Respondent is cyber-calling people (whose) cases I presided over in order to overturn them in the magistrate court.”

Chanakira pleaded with the court to prohibit Manyande from “searching clients in his area and connecting them to legal practitioners that can disturb his function”.

In the ruling, the court granted the peace order, directing Manyande “not to threaten, harass or communicate with the applicant via telephone or cellphone and not to disturb the applicant’s peace”.
