One of the fast-rising comedians Doc Vikela has taken the comedy scene by storm through his hilarious comic acts.
Vikela (born Tinashe Mpofu) said his passion in exploring social issues through comedy was a calling that saw him leaving his teaching profession to take up the art.
“I am a former high school teacher and I left the job because I wanted to pursue comedy. It was the love of my heart and I am happy to follow it up at a professional level,” said Doc Vikela.
Born in Mazuru district in Gutu, Doc Vikela went to school in Gweru before coming to Harare, where he did a Human Resource Management diploma before taking up other courses that landed him a job as a teacher at a private college in Harare.
To him the art of comedy is not merely in jokes, but the way they were delivered.
Vikela took up full-time comedy work in February last year and his passion is to popularise stand-up comedy across the country through various comedy festivals and activities.
“We are about to start our national tour as stand-up comedians and my hope is that together with my colleagues we can let people understand this genre and come to support us in these shows,” said Mpofu.
He is proud to be a co-founder of the Simuka comedy and Zimbabwe Official Stand-up Comedy Night. He was recently awarded by The Zimbabwe German Society for being the most improved comedian.
