BY AGATHA CHUMA AUSTRALIA-BASED Zimbabwean dancehall crooner Farai Larry Makombe, popularly known as Slicker 1, continues to make waves on the international scene.

He has collaborated with a Jamaican dancehall artiste Konshens on the song Bruck Out, which strengthened the long-standing bonds between Zimbabwe and Jamaican reggae artistes.

Bruck Out, suitable for parties and weekend chill outs, was produced by Cymplex Music in Zimbabwe.

Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style from his Australian base, Slicker 1 said collaborating with such an artiste was like a dream come true.

“It’s been more than words to explain, I must say dreams come true which went from just meeting a superstar to developing a relationship and being occasionally mentored. From working with Konshens I learnt that patience is the key.

“I also learnt that believing in your craft and putting in the work required is the only way to achieve the best in your game and to never give up or listen to what the rest of the world say or think, just be yourself and build confidence,” he said.

Slicker 1, who  proclaimed himself king of Australian dancehall, added that he had kept close relations with Konshens’ team, especially his manager, DJ Starr, who has also created a mix of his songs with Sticker 1’s in a mixtape titled Tora Mari Zvakabaka.

The tape also features dancehall superstars from Jamaica such as Mr Vegas, Skillibeng, Sean Paul and Beenie Man who also featured on his debut album Happy Life.

The dancehall chanter said he was planning on having tours back home very soon and fans should expect anytime.

“I do have plans to come and do shows back at home. I came to Zimbabwe in 2018 and performed a few shows with Killer T and Freeman HKD, who is my close friend and brother too. Very soon I will be back doing country wide tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe.”

Slicker 1 grew up in Zimbabwe before he left for Australia at the age of 18.

He has collaborated with both local and international artistes from South Africa, Jamaica, Australia and the US, who include Sean Paul, Beenie Man, D’banj, Jah Mason, Million Styles, Collie Buddz, Demarco, and Zimbabweans Winky D, Tocky Vibes, Roki, and the late Soul Jah Love among others.

Slicker 1 won Australia’s Dancehall King Competition 2013.
