ZIMBABWE’S Under-21 ladies field hockey team coach Tendai Maredza is confident that his side is ready for the tough competition at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup, at Potchefstroom, South Africa.

Maredza’s side’s opener against Canada will kick-off at 3pm.

The team played a goalless friendly match against Uruguay on Thursday as they tested their preparedness for the tournament.

“The matches (friendlies) were fine. I don’t think we need to major on anything. I think we are just ready for the tournament, and we are looking forward to tomorrow’s (today) game,” said Maredza.

“We are resting today (yesterday) and tomorrow (today) we will kick-start our tournament.”

Maredza admits that they face tough competition in their pool and they will have to work extra hard if they are to get good results.

Zimbabwe is in pool A together with Netherlands, Canada and the United States.

The team is also banking on some experienced players who have been part of the youth Olympic teams and the senior national team.

Maredza said he was pleased that they have a clean bill of health going into the Canada clash.

“There are no injuries, and every player is available to play, and they are also looking strong,” said Maredza.

The 16 teams participating in the tournament have been divided into four pools.

Pool B contains England, Ireland, South Africa and Ukraine while pool C consists of Argentina, Korea, Austria and Uruguay.

Germany, India, Malaysia and Wales make up pool D.
