BY WINSTONE ANTONIO SPIRIT Media Records, an arm of Spirit Praise Choir, has embarked on a gospel talent search, The Vocal Jewel competition that seeks to unearth and provide a platform for untapped talent.

The competition’s auditions, where they will be looking for 10 aspiring vocalists, are on this Saturday at a hotel in Harare.

In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style yesterday, Spirit Media Records director Learnmore Tawengwa said qualifying contestants for auditions should be from 12 years of age, yet to record and not affiliated to any record label.

“We are happy to have started our new project, The Vocal Jewel competition, as we search for raw talent with the aim to give them a platform to showcase their talents and become Zimbabwe’s biggest vocal jewels,” he said.

“We encourage singers who wish to be excellent in their craft to build their skills or develop their God-given gifts to audition for this competition that will accord them an opportunity to be trained and developed into brilliant and holistic musicians.”

He said for the search they would also be visiting towns and cities across the country.

“For one to register for the competition, it’s so easy, she or he must record a one-minute video singing a gospel song of their choice and send it to our WhatsApp number 0771838908. The successful applicants will be called for auditions this Saturday at a hotel in the capital,” he said.

“The competition’s ultimate winner from the 10 contestants will pocket US$500 plus a recording contract with Spirit Media Records, second prize is pegged at US$300 and a recording contract, with the third prize getting US$200 and a recording contract again.”

Tawengwa said understanding what he is called to do, seeing where he is going and knowing where he wants to go with his vision had spurred him on.

“As a music pastor, for the past six years I have been involved in music recording and noticed that there is a lot of untapped talent that is lacking mentorship and later on platforms to showcase their gifts. So, through The Vocal Jewel competition we want to refine our worshippers and expose their talents,” he said.

“We are saying The Vocal Jewel competition is that platform to unearth the jewel that will be polished and become a shining star. One can earn a living through a gospel musical gift and this is what we are saying must be exposed through the competition.”

Tawengwa said while the competition’s top three would be signed under the Spirit Media Records, the other seven would be incorporated into the praise and worship music outfit, Spirit Praise Choir as part of artistes’ development programme.
