BY KENNETH NYANGANI MUTARE City Council yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Dutch firm Vitens Evides International (VEI) to improve water sanitation in the city for the next five years.
The signing ceremony was attended by acting town clerk Blessing Chafesuka, deputy mayor Farai Bhiza and VEI regional manager Emma Lesterhuis.
Chafesuka said the project would help the council improve access to water and sanitation services with a bias towards low-income customers.
“We are going to be provided with 1,1 million Euros in this project. You (VEI) are, indeed, a true partner and we are hopeful that the partnership will enable the city to become a world class city that will provide quality service and prime investment destination by 2030,” Chafesuka said
The city’s deputy mayor said the project would be implemented in phases targeting water quality monitoring, water source protection, energy efficiency, low-income consumer strategy planning and water distribution among others.
“This is another opportunity for us all to make history and change the situation of our thirsty customers and communities for the better,” he said.
Meanwhile, council’s housing director Emma Mandiziba on Tuesday told a visiting European Union (EU) delegation led by Frank Porte that council takes pride in being transparent.
The delegation toured a number of council projects funded by the EU.

“I want to say at Mutare City Council transparency and accountability is one of our key priorities that has seen improved service delivery in the city,” she said.
“I am happy to say that we have since cleared our salary backlog and our books had gone for five years without being audited but all these have been cleared.”
