A total of 50 athletes drawn from around the country are expected to battle it out for honours.

BY FREEMAN MAKOPA The country’s up and coming bodybuilders are set to throng the Trysupps Fitness Academy Fife Avenue branch in Harare to participate at this year’s edition of Mr Novice Zimbabwe 2022 which is pencilled for March 26.

A total of 50 athletes drawn from around the country are expected to battle it out for honours.

National Federation of Zimbabwe Body Building and Fitness (NFZBBF) secretary-general, Quiet Shangai told NewsDay Sport that the competition seeks to expose novices to the fitness industry and help them in career progression.

“Novice is arguably the most important competition on our calendar because it seeks to expose novices to the fitness industry in terms of training and nutrition and career progression. Most athletes who don’t get such exposure end up not realising their full potential,” he said.

“We are expecting 50 athletes.  We are talking to coaches. Shantel Batch of Bulawayo is bringing one athlete, while Simon Gama, who is also from Bulawayo is bringing 10 athletes, while five athletes will come from Manicaland have confirmed.

“CC Banks is training two athletes and so is Godwin Mhaka. We are also expecting two athletes from Tarirai Chirume as well as one from Tinotenda Ryan Gumbo. Former Ms Zimbabwe Claudia Muvhuti is also bringing her daughter,” he said.

Shangai said the competition was for first timers and hence anything can happen.

“Novice is for first timers, hence you can’t identify a favourite. Furthermore, from an admin seat you can’t identify a favourite because if that favourite wins then we have a problem. This year we are going to have a packed seminar series on career progression, nutrition, training, WADA,” he added.

The competition will have five categories from which winners will be crowned and these include Junior Body building, Woman Fitness, Men’s Fitness, Men’s Physique and Senior Bodybuilding.

The categories include Juniors Under-21, Seniors One Line-Up, Ladies Fitness Figure and Men’s Fitness Physique.

Last year’s winners include Outgoing Novice Senior men bodybuilding champion, Alister Dimba, Pritchard Hoko, outgoing Men’s Physique Champion and Lynette Tom, outgoing Women Champion.

This year’s competition is sponsored by TrySupps Zimbabwe.
