BY TENDAI SAUTA NATIONAL Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) and its partner Moleskine Foundation have postponed their planned two-day hybrid AfroCuration mentorship programme to next year following a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The programme was scheduled to start yesterday.

The mentorship programme is designed to help youths in colleges to tell their stories through AfroWiki.

NGZ executive director Raphael Chikukwa told NewsDay Life & Style that they postponed the programme due to rising cases of COVID-19.

“The decision to postpone the conference was two-fold, firstly after our successful ICAC conference, everyone is tired and with the new Omicron coronavirus variant, we agreed with our partner Moleskine Foundation to push the workshop to next year,” he said.

“AfroCuration is coming just after an important conference on repatriation of our heritage from those that looted it.

“This new project in partnership with Moleskine Foundation will give the youth of this country an opportunity to contribute to AfroWiki using their own languages.”

Chikukwa added: “Language is power and when your language is sidelined it means that your culture is sidelined too. The purpose of this AfroCuration is to bring pride to our languages by feeding AfroWiki using our own languages.”

“For those youth that want to make history be it in Binga, Chiredzi, Dande, Mbire, Mutoko, Masvingo, Hwange, Plumtree or many other places around Zimbabwe, this is their moment to show they are proud of their languages.

“AfroWiki is a tool that is used all over, let’s feed it through our own languages.”
