“It’s one of our special days in our calendar of events for 2021 where we intend to celebrate one of our luminaries of Zimbabwean football, Ndumiso Gumede who is currently the president of the club. We all know what he has done for football in general and Highlanders in particular,” Highlanders acting chief executive officer Ronald Moyo said.

BY FORTUNE MBELE HIGHLANDERS have organised an event to honour club president Ndumiso Gumede on  Wednesday.

The event is the brainchild of Highlanders’ members, some of whom are based outside the country.

Moyo said Gumede had played a huge part in the development of football in the country and should be celebrated as such.

“We think this is a very big event for us. Going forward we would like to invite and encourage the corporate world  and other stakeholders especially those friends of Ndumiso Gumede, who worked with him either here at Highlanders or at Zifa, where he also served with distinction, to  view this initiative not as a Highlanders event but for Zimbabwean football. We have heard a lot of conversations, especially from football people complaining, and rightfully so, we tend to honour our legends when they are gone. This becomes testimony that we are opening a new chapter and celebrating him while he is still living,” Moyo said.

During his tenure as Highlanders chairman, Gumede, who also became the club’s chief executive officer before Nhlanhla Dube took over, is credited for playing a crucial role in the club acquiring the offices , the sports club and a camping house in Luveve suburb.

Gumede is also a former Zifa vice-president, chief executive officer and committee member, now honorary member and is also recognised for busting the Asiagate scandal while at the helm.

At one time, he was a member of the Caf appeals committee.

Highlanders’ principal sponsors Sakunda Holdings, are in the process of renovating the club’s offices to state-of-the-art modern football offices in Gumede’s honour.

Moyo said the Highlanders members have come up with a committee and have pledged to honour the veteran football administrator with a big present.

Chairman of the committee Ray Bhebhe, reiterated they wanted to celebrate Gumede for his achievements at the club while he is still alive.

“Gumede played his part and we as fans, supporters and members, we also want to play our part in honouring him which will act as a motivation for would-be leaders of the great club to see that people are not ignoring their works. We wanted to honour him while he is still alive. It’s something that has been there for some time now,” Bhebhe said.
