Tonight, theatre and spoken word awards will be bestowed to Outstanding Theatre Actor, Outstanding Theatre Actress, Outstanding Poet, Outstanding Comedian and Outstanding Theatre Production.

BY SINDISO DUBE ORGANISERS of the annual Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards have decided to make the ceremony a three-day showcase that starts tonight with a red-carpet event at the Bulawayo Theatre.

Last year, the ceremony was cut short after police forced its premature end before winners could be announced.

Tonight, theatre and spoken word awards will be bestowed to Outstanding Theatre Actor, Outstanding Theatre Actress, Outstanding Poet, Outstanding Comedian and Outstanding Theatre Production.

Tomorrow, it will be a nominees’ dinner where recipients will be presented with awards and certificates of recognition.

At that same event, accolades for fashion, models, film, Ndebele literature and Outstanding Music Producer will be presented.

The main event, where the remaining awards will be presented, is set for Saturday night at the Large City Hall.

One of the awards organisers Saimon Mambazo Phiri said a three-phased ceremony was meant to accord visibility to other genres.

“The idea is for other genres that are normally not seen on the stage to be witnessed by a greater audience and also allow more people to watch the awards ceremony, over the three days,” he said.

Phiri said fans should expect to see more new talent.

“We want to endorse that Bulawayo and its projects are building a tomorrow for the arts, now and today.

“Whatever is thrown at us we will navigate our way around it to keep live arts alive,” he said.

This year’s awards will see the People’s Choice Award winner walking away with title deeds to a residential stand.
