GWERU mayor Josiah Makombe has warned residents against illegally connecting water to their premises, saying the long arm of the law will catch up with them.
Makombe yesterday told Southern Eye that unauthorised water connections were prejudicing council of revenue as some residents were using treated water for free.
“We occasionally experience situations where residents illegally connect water to their premises by by-passing the meter, or without using a meter at all,” he said.
“I would like to warn such residents that council considers this to be a very serious offence which carries a hefty penalty. It’s my plea that we all behave as responsible citizens and abide by the council’s by-laws.”
But Gweru United Progressive Residents and Ratepayers Development Association Trust executive director David Chikore urged the local authority to expeditiously attend to faulty water meters and leakages.
However, Makombe said council was making use of its information communication technology department to ensure residents receive bills on their cellphones.
“As a way forward, I would humbly request that those who have not yet submitted their cellphone numbers to do so through any of our revenue halls, “he said.
