Tia taps into west African market

AFTER starving her fans of new music for a decade, RnB songbird Portia “Tia” Njazi has come out of hibernation, tapping into the west African market with a collaboration titled Africa that features Bwoy Tab, a Ghanaian producer and Afro hip-hop musician.

The South Africa-based Tia broke on to the local music scene in 2003 with the song Boy You Got To Know, when she was only 17 years old and has evolved over the years without changing her style.

The new song is her second release since her return to the music scene after the extended play (EP) titled Tia which she released last year.

Bwoy Tab raps over a lingering Afro-beat while Tia laces her vocals with much gusto.

The track is bouncy, danceable and compelling.

The cherry on top is the Shona lyrics as she talks about unity of purpose.

On the track, Tia did not only experiment with the Afro-beat, but also maintained her signature style. That originality is what makes her craft unique as she identifies with her roots which augurs well with the theme of the song, Africa, the motherland.

The 35-year-old songbird told NewsDay Life & Style that she has already started working on the accompanying video.

“I am happy to announce my return to music after a long absence and the song was inspired by Africa since this is Africa month.

“My aim is to penetrate much on the regional market and then strive to get onto the international platform,” she said.

The songbird was introduced to the world with the album Spice It Up which she recorded in 2007 and later earned her a string of accolades including the Zimbabwe Music Awards (Zima) for the best female urban groover.

Her second project was the 10-track album Euphoria recorded in 2011 at Crossline Music.

She has done a collaboration with Jamaican dancehall star Sizzla Kalonji on a single titled Harare.

Besides the much-anticipated EP, she also announced the launch of her new charity project I Rise Education Foundation which she said had received a stamp of approval from corporates.
